HYDERABAD: Even as the Telugu Desam Party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu continues to promote cash transfer scheme, some of the district leaders feel it had contributed to the party’s poor show. Participating in the workshop organised to analyse reasons for the party’s defeat, the district leaders believed to have told Mr. Naidu that the cash transfer scheme was perceived by people to be the same as National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme that lead to labour shortages. If middle classes in cities thought the cash transfer schene and distribution of colour TVs would confine labourers to their houses, farmers in rural areas felt it would add to their woes much like NREGA, they asserted. The CTS and colour TV offer thus worked against TDP as two significant segments of voters moved away. OverconfidenceSome felt overconfidence too did the party in when the elections came closer. Candidates and their supporters thought the party would come back to power given the combined strength of Grand Alliance and the perception that anti-incumbency would work against Congress. Blame TRSOther than these reasons, district leaders stuck to the party line that there was no proper vote transfer among the Grand Alliance partners in Telangana, while Praja Rajyam and Lok Satta cut into the party’s vote. Leaders from a few districts in Telangana blamed Telangana Rashtra Samithi for poor performance as it snatched and contest more seats than its actual strength.
