36 taken ill after drinking impure water

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: At least 36 residents of Reddy Palya near HAL were taken ill on Wednesday after consuming contaminated drinking water and 24 of them were admitted to HAL Hospital. Most of these people were residents of II Cross, Reddy Palya.

Although authorities in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the area MLA N.S. Nandish Reddy said the people could have fallen ill after consuming mangoes, residents said they were getting contaminated water for the last three days.

“As the pipes are old and corroded, cracks have developed resulting in contamination of water. These pipes have not been changed for the last 15 years,” Subbu, a plumber living in the area, said.

Senior Medical Superintendent of HAL Hospital S.R. Sundar, who treated most of the affected persons on Wednesday, said the problem could be because of water contamination.
