This Day That Age
The 471-million dollar St. Lawrence Seaway system, which opens the heart of the North American continent to ocean shipping, was officially opened in Montreal on June 26 by Queen Elizabeth and President Eisenhower. The Queen described it as one of the outstanding engineering accomplishments of modern times and a “magnificent monument” to the enduring friendship of Canada and the United States. President Eisenhower, standing with her, said: “It is a magnificent symbol to the entire world of the achievements possible to democratic nations peacefully working together for the common good.” Queen Elizabeth, who delivered half her speech in French, paid a warm tribute to the United States President. “You will, always be remembered as one of the great military leaders who brought the free world through the most severe crisis of modern times,” she told him. President Eisenhower declared: “This waterway, linking the oceans of the world with the great lakes of the American continent, is the culmination of the dreams of thousands of individuals on both sides of our common Canadian-United States border. It is the latest event in a long history of peaceful parallel progress by our two peoples.”
