The cartoon (June 26) depicting the Air India Maharaja with a begging bowl in hand is striking. It succinctly portrays the present state in which the once mighty national airline is. A truly thought-provoking cartoon! V.S. Ganeshan, Bangalore The cartoon was wonderful. The Maharaja with a begging bowl is exactly what describes Air India as it exists today. The airline is in such a hopeless financial situation that it cannot even pay the salaries of its staff. Mismanagement over the last 60 years, inability to provide its passengers good onboard and ground services, apathy towards passengers, jumbo size staff and, of course, the global recession are some of the reasons for the pathetic situation. At the same time, it is unfair to blame Air India alone for the crisis. Nothing was done by the government in the last five years to help it weather the turbulence it was facing. K. Shiva Shankar, Chennai
