Mayawati wasting public money: Congress

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Friday criticised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for inaugurating memorials and parks to commemorate Dalit icons and described it as “waste of public money.”

Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh demanded an inquiry into the issue and the manner in which Ms. Mayawati hurriedly inaugurated over 15 memorials in Lucknow on Thursday. The inauguration was done nine days ahead of schedule.

Probe sought

“Money of people is being wasted. It is absolute misuse of public money and public trust. People will not forgive her. She has seen the result in [the] Lok Sabha elections. The Bahujan Samaj Party will be finished in [the] 2012 Assembly elections,” Mr. Singh told journalists here.

While accusing the government of large-scale corruption, he said a probe should be conducted to find out from where stones were procured, from which mine, and who owned the mine

“The inaugurations were done in a hurried manner because of the PIL, which is to come up before the Supreme Court on July 3,” he added.
