BANGALORE: The annual product exposition, Design Expo 2009, of the final year ME and M.Tech students of the Centre for Electronics Design and Technology (CEDT), Indian Institute of Science, was held here on Friday. H.S. Jamadagni, Professor, CEDT, said the expo was a forum for interaction between students and industry members.

V. Prakash, Director, Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore, inaugurated the expo.

He said, “I noticed that the students were enthusiastic. After being guided through all the displays, I am struck by the fact that this knowledge can be used to enhance the work I do. If we could develop some means to use heat dissipated from the body to run computers, then it would be of immense benefit.”

Some of the projects at the show included those involving failure-resistant railway signalling system and a home security unit that uses an indoor unit and a motion detection sensor, that was fully developed at the institute.

It will soon be introduced in the market at a price of Rs. 15,000. A solar cooking set-up that can be integrated with the conventional LPG at home, which allows cooking to be done at any time of the day and gives great cost savings, was another interesting display at the expo.

This method is being developed into a working model that will be used in the department kitchen, said L. Umanand, professor.

Andre Pittet, Chief Project Advisor, CEDT, spoke.
