Learning material for government schools

Shastry V. Mallady

MADURAI: Attractive learning material in English will be supplied to all government elementary schools in the State for students of Classes I and II. Preparation of the material in English is under way and it will be given to primary schools through the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in a month. M.P. Vijayakumar, honorary adviser, SSA, told The Hindu here on Thursday that the ‘English supplementary readers’ would create interest among the children to learn English.

“The opportunity to learn English is less in panchayat union and government elementary schools and people generally cannot afford to buy private material in shops. Since it is costly, the SSA itself is preparing attractive supplementary readers like what is available in private schools.” Mr. Vijayakumar, who visited the SSA office here, said the objective was to create curiosity among primary school students to learn more in English. “The cards supplied by us now in the form of Activity Based Learning alone are not enough. So, steps have been initiated to come out with more learning material in English with pictures/drawings and so on.”

Short words in English and short sentences would be included in the material being prepared with the help of resource persons.
