CHENNAI: Chennai marked the observance of ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ with a series of seminars, processions, street plays and distribution of pamphlets. Director-General of Police K.P. Jain flagged off a procession and human chain by students in front of the Gandhi statute on the Marina and distributed pamphlets to passers-by. He also inaugurated an exhibition organised at the Santhome Higher Secondary School that highlighted different aspects related to drugs and drug addicts. Later talking to journalists, he said the awareness programme was meant to educate people about the harmful effects of drugs; the trauma one with an addiction and close family members go through; and, most importantly, the treatment. Additional Director-General of Police R. Sekar said the number of cases in Tamil Nadu had fallen because of intensive searches carried out by the police. The Narcotics Control Bureau South Zonal Unit of the Ministry of Home affairs collaborated with the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau Criminal Investigation Department (NIB CID) to conduct awareness programmes. Street theatre performances by members of Buddar Kalaikuzhu - Tamil Maiyam were organised at the school, Parry’s Corner, Central railway station and the Marina on the theme ‘Saving society.’ A one-day workshop was organised by T.T. Ranganathan Clinical Research Foundation and People Against Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Merchandise focussing on alcohol and drugs, addiction and the possibility of treating it, and the role of NGOs.
