NEW DELHI: The Delhi Assembly was adjourned for half an hour on Friday for lack of quorum. At 2 p.m. when the House was scheduled to begin, only a few MLAs from the BJP and the Congress were present. In the absence of the required numbers, Assembly Speaker Yoganand Shastri adjourned the House. While MLAs from both the Congress and the BJP traded charges for failing to turn up for the proceedings and completing the quorum, Dr. Shastri expressed concern over absenteeism. He made a reference to “deliberate” absenteeism and said unless they were bound by work, they should make all efforts to be present in the House. During Question Hour, senior BJP leader Jagdish Mukhi raised the issue of sale of adulterated milk in the city. He sought details on the steps being taken to check the sale of synthetic milk. Health Minister Kiran Walia replied that a drive against its sale was launched on June 1 and by June 20, 125 samples had been collected. Of these, 75 had been tested and only 13 were found adulterated. She said the adulterated samples were found to be free of synthetic substance, but were low on fat. Fifty samples, she said, were still being examined. To ensure there was no adulteration of milk and food stuff, the Government had roped in the Sriram Institute to verify quality and check impurities, she added. The issue of food adulteration was discussed at length with the BJP MLAs seeking details on the action being taken by the Government against those involved. BJP MLA Karan Singh Tanwar said food adulteration posed a threat to the lives of people. Later in the day, Subhash Chopra of the Congress moved the resolution to bring the Delhi police, the Delhi Development Authority and the MCD under the Delhi Government.
