VIJAYAWADA: The State-run telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has launched ‘BlackBerry’ services here to offer email, phone, web and multimedia on smart phones. Online tutoring and other value added services are also being offered on broadband connections to increase the revenues of the BSNL.

John Chrisostom, general manager (Krishna Telecom), BSNL, said at a press conference on Saturday that the users would get easy wireless access to email and other services on their mobile phones. It would allow access to the most popular email accounts such as Yahoo, Gmail and so on. The tariff plans under the BlackBerry services for individuals were Rs.299, Rs.499 and Rs.999 a month.

Mr. Chrisostom said the service would be available in two categories – BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) for individuals and BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) for corporates. The BIS would offer push mail technology to send or receive mails, high speed transfer rates of data, audio and video, and various other services.

Mr. Chrisostom also announced the commercial launch of the BSNL Live Tutoring service with Smartlinx as the franchisee. The range of available tutors could be accessed from BSNL website “ www.bsnl.livetutor.in”. This would enable a personalised tutor service to students on ‘anytime anywhere’ basis and through Indian tutors located anywhere in the country. This service would be available based on sessions and all times. Each session would be charged from Rs. 50 to Rs. 240 depending on the class and type of tutors used.

The Smartlinx would provide the video tutor services under the brand name “Live Tutor”, which would give user accounts to those who avail themselves of the service.

Mr. Chrisostom further said equipment was being installed at the BSNL’s city facility on Bandar Road for offering 3G mobile services. It involves offer of high quality voice and high speed transfer of data. As the installation of equipment was nearing completion, the service was expected to be launched here soon.

Mr. Chrisostom said the broadband service was being offered in a special package in rural areas where they would be allowed to open a kiosk and offer internet services at Rs. 5 an hour. He said all efforts were being made to install necessary equipment and increase the reach of broadband in the district.
