“Need to standardise Tamil software”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Stressing the need for standardisation of Tamil software and encoding for the latest operating system, former Anna University Vice-Chancellor M. Ananthakrishnan said the 8th Tamil Internet Conference in Germany would try to evolve a consensus on these subjects.

Dr. Ananthakrishnan told reporters that the Tamil Nadu government could take a policy decision on the standardisation of Tamil software only if there was a consensus among developers and researchers.

“I hope Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi would agree to our proposal for standardisation,” he said, pointing out how other Indian languages had successfully adopted all the latest developments.

The conference, organised by International Forum of Information Technology in Tamil (INFITT), will be held in the Institute of Indology and Tamil Studies of the University of Cologne between October 23 and 25.

Discussions will be held on open source software and localisation, Tamil enabling in mobile phones, machine translation, OCR and voice recognition, Tamil internet and social networking, E-Learning and standards of Tamil computing.

Mr. Anathakrishnan said those interested in presenting technical papers should send the synopsis to ti2009@infitt.org before August 15. Those interested in participating in the conference can contact Anto Peter, coordinator of the conference. His mail id: antopeter@yahoo.com.

Mr.Anto Peter said a Tamil computing exhibition will be held at the conference.
