dated June 29, 1959: Panchayat System

Prime Minister Nehru, addressing a gathering of village folk and peasants at a public meeting at Rai, a village 20 miles from Delhi on June 28, asked the people to take to co-operatives and strengthen the institution of panchayats as they were the means to ensure all-round progress and make the people self-reliant. Earlier, Mr. Nehru laid the foundation-stone of a Rs. 10 lakh multi-purpose institute and of a stadium, the former named after the late Mrs. Kamala Nehru and the latter after the Punjab Chief Minister, Sardar Kairon. The institute, which is likely to be completed in about two years’ time, would provide training facilities to those engaged in rural development. It would also train panchayat secretaries, co-operators and village level workers.
