This Day That Age
The Draft Code of Efficiency and Welfare, which has been drawn up by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, was discussed at the inter-ministerial meeting held in New Delhi on June 26 and June 27. The code lays down certain rights and responsibilities of managements and unions to make a concerted effort towards increasing efficiency in industry. It is a sequel to the code of discipline and the inter-union code of conduct, which have already been evolved and have now been in operation for about a year. The meeting generally agreed that the broad principles and objectives laid down in the code were unexceptionable and that their acceptance will be a big step forward. It was also agreed that the code lays down certain broad principles, on the interpretation of which there should be no legal quibbles. Some of the important suggestions made by the members related to avoidance of waste and inefficiency by both employers and workers, adoption of suitable productivity techniques and drawing up of suitable recruitment, training and promotion rules by the management.
