KCA to attract talent through quality grounds

Principal Correspondent

MoUs with many educational institutions

KOCHI: The fast pace of development all over has left children with few grounds to play.

With this in mind, the Kerala Cricket Association has launched a major project to build or develop first class stadiums in all the 14 districts of the State.

Clearly, the idea is to attract young talent to cricket with quality grounds. And with land being a scarce and expensive commodity in Kerala, the association has signed MoUs with many educational institutions for these stadiums.

“When completed, they will be ready to host Ranji Trophy matches,” said the KCA Secretary T.C. Mathew on Sunday.

“We have already come to an understanding with Thiruvananthapuram’s St. Xavier’s College (Thumba), the MG University at Kottayam, Thrissur’s KKTM College (Kodungallur) and Kozhikode’s Corporation Stadium while a stadium is coming up at Wynad and an indoor project is on at Thiruvalla,” he said.

“Apart from these we have developed grounds in Palakkad, Malappuram and Kannur. We are in the process of signing an agreement with the SD College in Alappuzha and have identified a ground at Muttoth in Idukki. We are also looking for a ground in Kasargod.”

City League

With the KCA’s new City League, a tournament for the champions of all the districts, which is likely to have its first edition in Kochi, the association is keen to have many options in the city.

“Kochi Refinery has given us a proposal to expand its ground and we are in the process of developing grounds at the Fisheries College (Panangad) and the Cooperative Medical College (Kalamassery),” said Mr. Mathew. “We may need four or five grounds for the City League, we may even use the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium if the work there is completed.”

Additional task

Meanwhile, the association formed its various sub-committees at its AGM here on Saturday.

Four members of the senior selection committee (Ranji Trophy and under-25) have been given an additional task, each will also head a junior committee.

“Through this we hope to have some continuity in the selection process,” said the KCA Secretary.
