Software on pricing for farmers

Staff Correspondent

Tumkur: Two students of Channabasaveshwara Institute of Technology (CIT) at Gubbi in Tumkur District have developed a software for farmers to access latest trends in pricing of agricultural produce in the global market.

The software “Decision Support Service”, is expected to help small and medium scale farmers also to understand and analyse the trends in relation to the ruling prices in local Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) and take a beneficial decision to sell their own produce.

Kiran and Abhijit, students, conducted an in-depth study of the trading in several APMCs in the district, including the first-grade copra market yards in Tiptur, Huliyar, and Gubbi, and collected the data.

CIT vice-principal and head, department of computer science, Shantala Suresh, guided the students in the development of the software.

Ms. Suresh said by employing the software, the APMCs all over the country could curb the menace of middlemen. Farmers would get fair prices for their produce. Quantum of trading in APMCs would gradually increase and that would boost tax collection.

CIT managing director, Jyotiganesh, said the institute was located in a rural area with the main objective of giving a fillip to rural economics and the achievement of the two students was in tune with it.
