DYFI leader held in police station attack case

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The city police, on Monday, arrested a local leader of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) in connection with the assault on police personnel, including a woman constable, at the Peroorkada station on Sunday evening.

They identified the main accused as Anil Kumar, area secretary of the DYFI Peroorkada unit. He has been charged with causing injury to uniformed policemen to prevent them from discharging their official duties, verbal abuse, airing threats, unlawful assembly and simple assault under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Anil was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.

The police said they were moving for the arrest of Anil’s party colleague, Saidas, on the charge of assaulting and injuring the woman constable Bindu. He had been additionally charged with outraging the modesty of a woman under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code. Ms. Bindu fractured her arm in the incident.

According to the police, Anil and Renjith, another DYFI worker, and their supporters fought with each other at Kuravankonam junction on Saturday evening.

Anil’s grouse against Renjith and his supporters was that they had informed the police about his relative’s alleged suicide, an official said.

The police registered two different cases of simple assault on the basis of the statements given by Anil and Renjith.

They also confiscated their motorbikes.
