Rayaprolu remembered

Special Correspondent

BAPATLA (GUNTUR DT.): The Forum For Better Bapatla has observed the 25th death anniversary of ‘Mahakavi’ Rayaprolu Subba Rao, who hailed from Bapatla.

At a meeting on Tuesday, it resolved to install the statue of the great poet in the town. The poet, who brought name and fame to Bapatla, studied in Bapatla Board High School and dedicated his book ‘Asumathi’ to the then school headmaster Panchapakesayyar. At the meeting, members thanked advertising guru A.G. Krishnamurthy, who came forward to donate the amount for installing the statue.

Subba Rao’s poem edesamegina, endu kalidina, pogadara nee talli bhumi bharatini is very popular throughout the State.

SEZ policy

The UPA Government had been aggressively promoting a policy aimed at setting up SEZs. The units were proposed to be located in areas of relative deprivation and in turn generate multiplier effects in regions outside the units. “However, an analysis by Social Watch, suggests that developed States have a disproportionate share of SEZs,” said Peoples’ Watch Forum convener P.C. Sai Babu. Industrially developed and high-revenue generating States account for 75 per cent of the SEZ approvals.

Within the States also, a majority of the units were located in proximity to larger cities. In Haryana, 89.3 per cent of the SEZs were located in Gurgaon alone.

Gautam Buddha Nagar accounted for 75 per cent of the total SEZs approved in Uttar Pradesh, the Forum observed. The forum urged the government to come up with a policy that facilitated development of backward areas.
