Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial “A unique number” (June 30). The appointment of Nandan Nilekani as chairperson of the Unique Identification Authority of India is welcome. At a time when the nation faces serious threats from terrorism and other inter-state crimes, the idea of providing a UID number to every citizen is timely. Under the existing system, identity cards — voter ID, ration card, driving licence, PAN card and the like — are issued by different agencies. Only if the proposed UID card integrates all the above will it serve the intended purpose. S. Nallasivan, Tirunelveli The proposed UID number will be meaningful only if it serves the purpose of all other cards issued so far and the citizens are spared the burden of keeping different types of cards. C. Petson Peter, Kochi The success of the Centre’s project to provide a UID number to every citizen lies in accurate data entry. The bureaucracy has a great role to play in making the scheme work. Unlike ration cards and voter ID cards, one hopes the UID cards will be error-free. P. Esakki Muthu, Udangudi B. Vishwanatha Rao, Hyderabad
