Food security

The article “For inclusive approach to food security” (June 30) rightly points to the risk of some sections losing the food security enjoyed by them under the proposed Food Security Act. It has also pointed to the unreasonable income criteria fixed for estimating poverty. However, making PDS universal is fraught with the danger of opening the doors to hoarding and black-marketing.

The purpose would be better served if the income criteria for determining BPL families are fixed at a reasonable level, the quantum of foodgrains offered is right and the prices are kept at bare minimum levels.

M.D. Ravikanth,

Is subsidising food a long-term solution to poverty? Most States which bear the brunt of food subsidy do so because it helps them reap the benefits during elections. If people are empowered and their purchasing power is augmented, what is the need for subsidy?
