Pathanamthitta
Religious fervour: The rituals associated with the ‘Thruppooth arat’ of the Mahadevar Temple at Chengannur in progress on Wednesday. PATHANAMTHITTA: The ‘Thiruppooth Arat’ ceremony of the Mahadevar Temple at Chengannur was held on Wednesday. Hundreds of devotees from different parts of the State thronged the temple to witness it. The presiding deities, Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi, were taken out in a ceremonial procession to the Mithrappuzha kadavu (‘arat kadavu’) on the Pampa around 8.30 a.m. Tantri Kandararu Mohanaru, assisted by Melsanthi Narayanan Namboodiri performed the rituals. The deities were escorted back to the temple with the accompaniments of caparisoned elephants and a special ‘panchavadyam.’ The traditional ‘thalappoli’ lamps were carried by hundreds of woman devotees. There was a Naagaswarom recital by Thuravur Narayana Panicker during the arat procession. Devotees offered Nirapara (a traditional measure of paddy) to the deities when the procession reached the temple precincts at 1.30 p.m. Deputy Devaswom Commissioners Suresh Jeevan and C.R. Radhakrishna Kurup and Assistant Commissioner Soman Pillai were present. Additional Chief Secretary and Devaswom Chief Commissioner K. Jayakumar visited the temple to inspect the ‘naalambalom’ and other temple structures which were damaged in a whirlwind recently. Mr. Jayakumar said steps would be taken to repair the temple structures on a war footing.
