dated July 2, 1959: Forest research

Orders of the Government of India for setting up a Southern Forest Research Centre at Coimbatore had been received and the project was being implemented said Mr. P.D. Stracey, Director of Forest Education, while delivering the welcome address at the annual convocation of the Southern Forest Rangers College in Coimbatore on June 30. The appointment of staff was under way and sanction for purchase of equipment had been received. Some branches of biological research would be opened at Coimbatore, such as silviculture, soil science, entomology and mycology. While branches of forest products would be opened at Bangalore, such as timber utilisation, wood preservation, chemistry of forest products and minor forest products and a branch for the long standing problem of spike disease in sandal.
