She rues marketing department deciding editorial matters Four other journalists given awards
BEST MENTOR: R. Poornima, Editor of Udayavani, receiving Mentor Award from Shangon Das Gupta, Executive Director, Communication for Development and Learning in Bangalore on Wednesday. BANGALORE: Udayavani Editor R. Poornima was conferred with the Mentor Award for Encouragement to Development Journalism here on Wednesday by Communication for Developmental and Learning (CDL). The Mentor Award is instituted in memory of the late Sanjoy Das Gupta, IAS. Dr. Poornima, who has 29 years of experience in Kannada journalism, is the first woman editor of a mainstream newspaper. She has carefully nurtured a team of talented journalists, leading them by example. On receiving the award from Shangon Das Gupta, Ms. Poornima spoke on the changing nature of journalism and rued the trend of letting the marketing department decide editorial matters. She thanked CDL for giving her an opportunity to be a part of its development projects and thanked her mentor K.N. Hari Kumar, former editor of Deccan Herald and Prajavani. CDL’s Charkha Awards were conferred on Mallikarjun Hospalya, a freelancer, for his article entitled Annadha Battalige Vishadha Neeru and Katte Gururaj of Vijaya Karnataka for his article Asia Neerina Tankinalli Athanka Tevali. The special Charkha Awards for Child Rights Journalism, instituted by Sathi, an NGO, went to M. Mahesh Bhagiratha of Kannada Prabha for his article entitled Bareuva Kaige Bare. Two publications were released on the occasion: one a comic book called Vani’s Story- Not Just A Story about tsunami-affected children and a monograph entitled Not Just Comics But Comics You Can Use about how comics can be used for development issues.
