High Court directive to Delhi Govt.

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court issued a series of directions to the Delhi Government and the civic bodies on Wednesday for creating a barrier-free environment in schools run by them for the physically challenged.

The Court said the Government and the civic bodies -- the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Delhi Cantonment Board -- should recruit special teachers in adequate numbers as per the rules in their schools on the salary and remuneration of general teachers.

It said the schools should also provide aid and appliances to these students and build infrastructure like special toilets and ramps on the school premises for them.

The schools would also provide them teaching material in Braille, the Court said.

Observing that every physically challenged student has the right to education, the Court said the schools would have to make available these facilities on their campuses .
