No uncertainty in professional education: Baby

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Education Minister M.A. Baby has refuted reports that there is uncertainty in the field of self-financing professional education in the State.

The Minister, who was replying to questions at a press conference here on Wednesday to announce the winner of the P.K. Kalan Award instituted by the State government, said there was no uncertainty whatsoever and that everyone would realise it soon. The allotments would begin in the first week of this month and would not extend beyond September.

Move for consensus

He said that according to the court orders, all the seats in self-financing colleges belonged to the managements and the government had the freedom to only regulate admissions and fees through regulatory committees.

What the government was trying to do was to hold talks with the managements, persuade them and reach a consensus.

Such a problem would not have developed had the government headed by A.K. Antony signed an agreement with the managements.

The Yashpal Commission had stated that many self-financing colleges were not following any norms. It applied to medical education which dealt with the handling of human lives as well.

The present situation made the imposition of restrictions difficult.

‘Have to abide by law’

He said he had nothing against the stand adopted by the students organisation, including the SFI, on the issue. They had to protect the interests of the students.

But they should realise that the government could go only by laws and the Constitution. But students’ organisations like the KSU should not develop any amnesia to history, he said.
