Councillors protest privatisation

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: The handing over of the maintenance of basic amenities in Alandur and Pallavaram Municipalities to private firms came in for criticism from councillors of the urban local bodies on Tuesday.

They complained that many of the facilities entrusted to the private companies were in very poor state.

During a routine monthly meeting of the Alandur Municipality, the elected representatives opposed any move to privatise the system of internal distribution of water. Councillors cutting across party affiliation said that the residents had already been put to inconvenience because of privatisation of garbage collection and maintenance of street lights.

They said that the primary collection of garbage was poor. Vehicles engaged in solid waste management rarely entered some localities. The workers found it convenient to sweep the garbage, collect it in a heap and set it on fire.

The councillors said that they were at the receiving end of the residents’ ire.

The maintenance of street lights fared no better and councillors and some volunteers were forced to do more legwork.

“Taxpayers’ money is spent on street light maintenance but the lights do not burn at the right time,” said V.N.P. Venkatraman, councillor from Ward No. 23. “We do a lot of work running around different places for the sake of residents… ” Greater attention had to be paid to ensure that lights were switched on and turned off at the right time and that they were properly maintained, he added.
