Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The hike in the prices of petrol and diesel has come in for all-round criticism. The State secretariat of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) described it as tantamount to punishing the people who had voted the Congress to power. The increase in the price of crude oil was touted as the reason for the hike. When the previous government of Manmohan Singh had made attempts to hike the fuel prices on similar grounds, the Left Parties were there to block it. Now, there was no one to prevent the Centre from moving along the neo-liberal path, it said. LDF convener Vaikom Viswan described it as yet another blow to the people who were reeling under price rise. It showed that the government’s commitment was not to the common man but to private oil monopolies such as Reliance, he said. Communist Party of India State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan said the decision to hike the prices of petroleum products would have far-reaching implications and result in price rise of essential commodities. He said strong agitations should be organised against this ‘anti-people’ decision of the Centre. Bharatiya Janata Party State president P.K. Krishnadas said the rise in the price of crude oil in the international market did not warrant a hike in prices in the domestic market. He expressed fear that it would push up the price of all commodities in the market. Revolutionary Socialist Party State secretary V.P. Ramakrishna Pillai demanded immediate withdrawal of the hike, saying it would plunge the poor into more misery. Congress(S) State president Ramachandran Kadannapally described the fuel price hike on the eve of the Lok Sabha session as the worst disrespect to the house and injustice to the people. The All Kerala Bus Operators’ Organisation demanded immediate increase of bus fares.
