ERODE: Gobichettipalayam Municipality has destroyed a tonne of apples on grounds for having an unknown wax coating. According to C. Arumugam, sanitary officer, following complaints from members of the public, teams of health workers and officials from the civic body raided shops in around bus stand and main market area and found apples with unknown wax coating. Mr. Arumugam said their teams found apples, particularly imported ones, without mentioning the wax coating and the details of the wax. He said the teams seized a tonne of apples worth about Rs. 1 lakh. He warned fruit vendors to adhere to government norms by mentioning the type of wax used to coat apples.
