Towards enhancing employability of youth

Staff Reporter

Skill councils to be set up in 20 high-growth sectors

42 ITIs identified for imparting international standard heavy motor vehicle driving skills

Training to be given in operating agricultural machinery to help farmers

Kakinada: As the industries’ requirement of trained manpower goes up, the State Department of Employment and Training (DoET) is laying greater emphasis on enhancing the skills of youth who already possess technical knowledge but fail to properly present themselves before employers.

While the Central Government has set in motion the process of establishing National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) whose objective is to develop core employability skills, the DoET has started preparing its own action plan for improving the capabilities of youth to match the competency standards to be set by the NSDC.

The NSDC would set up skill councils in 20 high-growth sectors to enable industry to link skill development efforts with overall growth of respective sectors in association with educational institutions of all hues.

The DoET has in this context sought adequate importance to be attached to Industrial Training Institutes (ITI), including those in the private sector. Since most of the students in ITI come from rural areas, their inherent skills needed to be brought out to help them match the standards of their peers from cities.

The NSDC seeks to bridge this gap to realize the full potential of youth.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh is for this purpose making a detailed assessment of the demand – supply situation in the job market to take necessary measures, said Principal Secretary (Labor, Employment, Training and Factories) Bhanwar Lal.

Addressing mediapersons at the Government ITI, Kakinada on Thursday, Mr. Bhanwar Lal said the State Government had identified 42 ITIs for imparting international standard heavy motor vehicle driving skills to youth to meet the global demand for trained drivers in foreign countries. Those seeking employment as drivers in countries like the UAE or any other country have to qualify for the said course which would be of short duration.

Due emphasis has been laid on training of drivers looking at jobs in the domestic sector.

The Government has also decided to offer training in operating agricultural machinery to help farmers, starting with the Godavari districts.

Similarly, training was sought to be given to meet the requirement of food processing industries.

English language communication skills are being provided to students of ITI as even shop floor workers need to be conversant in English in the current scenario in view of the Indian economy’s integration with that of the world.

Job portal

Mr. Bhanwar Lal said that the national employment portal (http://employmentservice.nic.in) was operationalized in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.

Job-seekers can register themselves in that website from where the employers could directly pick up suitable candidates or approach the Department(s) of Employment. The employment exchanges would manage the databases and also cater to skills development along with other departments concerned. Director of Rajiv Udyogasri K Dhanunjaya Reddy, Regional Deputy Director of Employment and Training, G.V. Prabhakar and ITI Kakinada principal V Srinivasa Rao were among those present.
