Quota in IIT faculty to continue, says Sibal

Aarti Dhar

NEW DELHI: Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal has clarified that quota in the faculty of the Indian Institutes of Technology was here to stay and attempts to exempt the elite institution from the implementation of reservation in faculty proved infructuous. “You have to work with it,” he told the Directors of the IITs here who wanted a clarification on the issue.

Last year, the government had asked the IITs to reserve seats for SCs, STs and the OBC classes in the faculty, but the move had drawn criticism from the directors and faculty of IIT who felt that reservation would dilute the quality of education. The IITs expected to be exempted from reservation in faculty along with 47 institutions of higher education when the government passed the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Reservation in Posts and Services) Bill in the Rajya Sabha in 2008. But the Bill was could not be passed in the Lok Sabha due to opposition from members.
