Augment drinking water supply, say councillors

THURAIYUR: Municipal councillors who spoke at the regular council meeting held here recently, urged the municipal authorities to take immediate action for augmenting the supply of drinking water to all the wards in the town. They questioned the propriety of levying water tax without ensuring adequate supply.

Initiating a discussion, Kannan (AIADMK) said that the municipal authorities should chalk out an action plan on a war-footing for augmenting the supply of drinking water to all the wards.

He said that the residents were struggling everyday for meeting their potable drinking water needs. Priority should be taken at least now.

A group of DMK councillors expressed their anguish over the ‘lethargic’ attitude of the officials in supplying water. Rajeswari said scarcity of drinking water posed a problem to all the residents of the town, comprising 24 wards. Manoharan, Sudhakar and Sivanandam wanted expeditious action for the implementation of the Cauvery Combined Drinking Water Supply scheme in the town. Another councillor, Balu, wanted stern action, including disconnection of pipelines, against those drawing drinking water using electrical motors. Balakrishnan, a councillor, said that in a few wards, people had dug out the earth to a depth of about three to five feet, to set up their pipelines. These pits had become a source of health hazard, due to contamination by sewage water.
