Workshop today

TIRUCHI: The United States – India Educational Foundation (USIEF) and the Department of Women’s Studies, Bharathidasan University, have jointly scheduled a mentoring workshop for applicants and potential applicants of the Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships at the Academic Staff College in the university’s Khajamalai campus from 10.15 a.m. to 1.00 p.m, on July 3. The resource persons comprise Vasudevan of USIEF, and two Fulbright Fellowship Awardees, Kannabiran of National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi and M. Ravichandran of Bharathidasan University, besides experts associated with the fellowships.

In a communication, N. Manimekalai, Director, Department of Women’s Studies said that the USIEF has recently announced its annual competition for Fulbright-Nehru and other Fulbright fellowships for Indian citizens for the academic year 2010-2011. These fellowships offered in all disciplines are open to students, academics, teachers and professionals. The last date for submission of completed application for most of the categories is July 15, 2009.

The communication said that the signing of the new India-US bilateral Fulbright agreement on July 4, 2008, has resulted in the two governments becoming full partners in the implementation of the Fulbright Program in India. There is also a significant increase in the number of fellowships awarded each year. USIEF expects to offer approximately 85 Fulbright-Nehru fellowships for Indians in 2010.

The objective of organizing the workshop is to offer information and guidance on the fellowships. The workshop would include discussions on basic guidelines in Fulbright applications, elements of strong applications and review process.

There would be discussion on ‘Application and writing proposals.’ Presentation would include guidelines for presenting strong applications, the feasibility of the project or proposed activities, demonstration of the knowledge of research or work that has been carried out in India and the resources available in the United States, the applicability of the learning at the home institutions, and the justification for travel to the United States.
