Initiative said to be first of its kind in a State varsity

Focus on blood grouping, complete blood picture

HYDERABAD: Osmania University has taken up the task of preparing a database of the health profile of the newly admitted post graduate students in a first of its kind initiative in a State university.

The university chose the centralised counselling being held at the Nizam College from July 1.

Every student getting admitted is being referred to a team of doctors and paramedics from the Institute of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic Diseases and the University Health Centre. “The process involves the general health check-up where details of height, weight, blood group, and general health status are obtained,” said K. Pratap Reddy, Director, OU admissions.

The focus is on blood grouping and complete blood picture of the newly admitted students to assess the haemoglobin levels and anaemic condition.

“Apart from health check-up, medical and nutritional advice and counselling are being given to students for their general well-being and upkeep of health,” according to A. Jyothi, Director, Institute of Genetics.

Anti-ragging drive

The authorities are also creating awareness about anti-ragging at the venue. A specially prepared information booklet on anti-ragging is being given to the students.

“Affidavit and undertaking from the students for abiding by the provisions of anti-ragging will be obtained at the time of admission,” Dr. Reddy said.
