Make registration mandatory: Vedi

Protest against government order

Thiruvananthapuram: Ayurveda doctors and students across the State, under the banner of the Ayurveda Aikya Vedi, staged a dharna in front of the Secretariat here on Thursday. They had been seeking the withdrawal of a government order (GO) allowing traditional healers to practice medicine without the mandatory registration.

The GO, allowing all ‘Ayurveda and Sidha traditional healers’ with five years of experience, to practice medicine without the mandatory registration and licence will lead to anarchy in the health sector, allowing quacks to thrive, the Aikyavedi said.

Inaugurating the dharna, RSP national general secretary T.J. Chandrachoodan said no progressive government can issue an order allowing those without academic qualifications to practice medicine. He demanded that the government withdraw the said GO and protect the public health sector.

The vedi accused the government of giving more importance to securing the livelihood of quacks than protecting the health of the common citizen. The GO issued by the government is an insult to all those who had spent years seeking formal qualification to practice Ayurveda and other Indian Systems of Medicine, vedi office-bearers said.

The recognition enjoyed by Ayurveda across the globe was due to the high level of academic qualification and practical experience of the doctors here, they pointed out. The representatives of various associations of Ayurveda teachers and practitioners spoke on the occasion.
