Udupi
Udupi: The general body meeting of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat(TP) was adjourned here on Thursday owing to lack of quorum. The Congress charged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members of deliberately staying away from the House as a political ploy. In-charge president of the panchayat Satish Poojary told presspersons that although the Congress had majority, with 23 of 41-member House being present, including eight independent members of the K. Jayaprakash Hegde-group), the meeting had been called to decide on the formulation of an action plan for disbursing the Government grants. The BJP members did not want the Congress to take credit for the formulation of action plan. Instead, they were concentrating on winning the elections of the Social Justice Committee to be held on Friday. “The BJP believes that it has an edge because its two MPs, three MLAs, two MLCs, and 13 gram panchayat presidents, taking the strength of the House to 61, too have voting rights. It first wants to come to power and then formulate the action plan. Hence, its members kept themselves away from today’s meeting. They could have attended the meeting to at least condole the death of TP member Irene Menezes,” Mr. Poojary said. Condolence meetingOwing to lack of quorum, the meeting was finally adjourned after an hour. The Congress members present there decided to have a condolence meeting for Irene Menezes, who passed away recently. Taluk panchayat members Ramesh Shetty, Veronica Carnelio, and Diwakar Kundar spoke.
