Appeals in colour TV case posted for July 6

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Thursday posted appeals in the “colour television case” involving AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa – the appeal by persons fighting against their convictions and the government’s appeal against Ms. Jayalalithaa’s acquittal – for hearing on Monday (July 6) to decide on a date for the final hearing.

The original charge sheet in the “colour television case,” based on which Ms. Jayalalithaa had been arrested on December 7, 1996, had included eleven names including those of Ms. Jayalalithaa, her close associate Sasikala Natarajan, ex-Ministers V.R.Nedunchezhiyan and T.M.Selvaganapathy and others including senior IAS officers.

In 2000, a Special Court acquitted Ms. Jayalalithaa, Ms. Sasikala and the latter’s relative Mr. Bhaskeran while convicting the others (excluding Mr. Nedunchezhiyan who died in the meanwhile).

The government had subsequently filed an appeal against Ms. Jayalalithaa’s acquittal.

When the petition of the convicted persons challenging the ruling against them came up for hearing on Thursday, Justice M. Jeyapaul said that it could be taken up along with the government’s appeal and listed both for Monday when he said that a date for the final hearing on the petitions could be decided.
