SKU research scholars oppose Ph.D in distance mode

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: The research scholars of Sri Krishnadevaraya University continued their protest against introduction of Ph.D course in the distance education mode on Friday by disrupting the functioning of the office of Centre for Distance Education.

The students staged ‘rasta roko’ at the main entrance of the university for some time. They raised slogans against the university officials and commercialisation of academic research.

The Centre for Distance Education of the university has recently announced introduction of Ph.D in distance mode and the research scholars of the university opposed the decision immediately.

They have been protesting in different forms for the last four days.

On Thursday, after opposing the decision at a open forum organised by the university college the research scholars went to the V-C’s office and laid a siege by squatting around the office. They alleged that introduction of Ph.D in distance mode make the research-oriented course completely commercial and everybody who could shed money could have a Ph.D.

V-C’s explanation

It would also adversely affect the quality of research completely and the degree would hold no academic worth, whatsoever, the research scholars said.

V-C P. Kusuma Kumari explained to the agitating students that all universities had already introduced Ph.D course in distance education mode already. Regular students need not worry about quality of research, she said.
