Magesh back in joint lead

NEW DELHI: Grandmaster P. Magesh Chandran bounced back into title contention by regaining the joint lead with a timely victory over Spain’s International Master Jordi Fluvia in the eighth round of the Montcada International Open chess tournament at Montcada, Spain, on Thursday.

With a round to go, Magesh (6.5 points) shares the lead with Cuba’s Yusnel Bacallao. In the final round, Magesh takes on compatriot and second seed S. Arun Prasad.

It proved a good day for the other Indians, with Arun Prasad and S. Kidambi winning their games and Tania Sachdev earning a draw.

The results (eighth round, involving Indians): Jordi Fluvia (Esp, 5.5) lost to P. Magesh Chandran (6.5); S. Arun Prasad (6) bt Jurijs Mihailovs (Lat, 5); S. Kidambi (5.5) bt Maria Perpinya (Esp, 4.5); Eric Dominguez (Esp, 5) drew with Tania Sachdev (5).
