Safety matters: S. Jeyabalan, president, Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, addressing a seminar in Madurai.

MADURAI: The objective of providing a zero-accident workplace for the factory workers should be the aim of all industries, said D. Jeganathan, vice-president (corporate services), Sundaram Industries, TVS Rubber.

“Our company takes employee safety seriously and ours is one of the few rubber companies in the world to have consistently won the Japanese Total Productive Maintenance awards, which also factors in safety aspects. Employees are the best assets of a company,” he said.

Mr. Jeganathan was addressing a seminar on ‘best health, safety and environment practices in industries’ organised here on Friday by the Inspectorate of Factories, Government of Tamil Nadu and the Madurai Action Centre of the National Safety Council (NSC). Police records were showing that road accidents do not happen but are caused by unsafe practices and environment. While insurance claims can compensate loss of property, human lives were irreplaceable.

S. Ismail, Joint Chief Inspector of Factories, Madurai, said that the Directorate worked with industries to prevent accidents. Sessions on safety were conducted at the site of big industries and also at industrial estates.

S. Jeyabalan, president, Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that safety practices had to be inculcated among employees over a period of time rather than thrust on them.

M. Kumaravel, deputy manager (safety), TVS Rubber and also Secretary of the Madurai Action Centre of NSC, participated in the inaugural session. The seminar was attended by 150 safety officers, production managers and supervisors from industries in ten southern districts.
