MP denounces Railway Budget

Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: G.M. Siddeshwar, Davangere MP, has expressed his disappointment with the Railway Budget presented by Mamata Banerjee and alleged that Karnataka has been cold-shouldered.

Mr. Siddeshwar, in a statement here on Saturday, said that Ms. Banerjee had not approved any of the long-pending railway projects of the State and added that she had failed to earmark funds for the Kottur-Jagalur-Chitradurga line on which survey work was completed long ago.

She had also ignored the demands of many districts in the State, he said and added that there was no mention of work on the Bangalore-Hubli line, via Tumkur, Sira, Chitradurga and Davangere. A request had been submitted to the Ministry seeking introduction of an inter-city train between Davangere and Bangalore, but that too was not considered.

Unmanned crossings

The MP said the Minister had failed to take steps to upgrade so many unmanned level-crossings in the country. However, he said the only saving grace was the approval of the Harihar-Shimoga line.

M.S.K. Shastry, president of the Railway Commuters’ Welfare Association, said that the Minister had not increased fares, but at the same time had not extended railway facilities to the people of the country in general.
