New initiative: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit along with International Labour Organisation’s Leyla Tegmo Reddy releasing the training material for domestic workers at a function in New Delhi on Saturday. NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday launched a new initiative to develop the skills of domestic workers employed in and around the Capital. The programme has been launched by the Delhi Government in association with the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment and the International Labour Organisation. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dikshit expressed hope that the initiative would help develop the skills of domestic helps working in Delhi and the National Capital Region. She said 90 per cent of such workers have had no formal education and training nor any opportunity to hone their skills. About 1 lakh people are working as domestic helps in Delhi, she said. Coming from various parts of the country in search of employment, they are able to perform their tasks only through full commitment. But now, she said, the initiative to train such workers in maintaining personal hygiene, personal communication skills, management of urban kitchens, handling domestic pets, handling kitchen gardens, and providing first-aid would hopefully go a long way to acclimatise them and help them perform better.
