Journos, lensmen stage protest
Staff Reporter
Tirupur: Members of Tirupur Press Club staged a demonstration in front of the Corporation office here on Saturday to protest against the physical and verbal abuse of photojournalists and reporters of a Tamil daily by Mayor and a few councillors on the Corporation office premises on July 2.
Incident
The incident took place on the Corproation office premises soon after the bhoomi puja for the new administrative block was over.
V. Thooyavan, president, TPC, said it was indeed a pity that Mayor, who is the head of the city, along with corporation councillors resorted to physical and verbal attack on mediapersons in the pretext of questioning the authenticity of a report which appeared in a Tamil daily.
Members of various organisations of reporters and news photographers from other parts of the district, who had joined the agitation by the members to express their solidarity, termed the incident as an attack on freedom of the press.
“It is also indecent that Mayor and councillors chose the bhomi puja fucntion, where a lot of VIPs were present, to attack journalists,” they said.
The Press Club also passed a resolution condemning the attack and sent a copy to the Chief Minister, Collector, Superintendent of Police and Minister for Information and Broadcasting seeking action against the Mayor and the councillors.
