Third DU list holds out hope for many

Parul Sharma

NEW DELHI: The third cut-off list for admission to Delhi University colleges released over the weekend holds out hope for many students with popular courses like B.Com (Programme), B.Com (Honours) and Economics (Hons) still on offer at several colleges.

They include “top-rung” institutions like Hindu College, Lady Shri Ram College, Ramjas College and Sri Venkateswara College.

According to the third list, students can still pursue one of the most sought after courses -- B.Com (P) -- at different institutions like Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Bharti College, Dyal Singh, Jesus and Mary, Kamla Nehru, Kirori Mal, Ramjas, Sri Venkateswara and Zakir Husain College (morning).

The same course is also available in the morning and evening shifts of P.G.D.A.V College, Ram Lal Anand College and Shaheed Bhagat Singh College.

Seats are open for admission to B.Com (Hons) at Hindu College, LSR, Ramjas, S.G.G.S. College of Commerce, S.G.T.B. Khalsa College and Venkateswara College, though the cut-off percentage has only marginally dropped in the third list between 0.25 per cent and 2 per cent.

Some courses re-opened

Thanks to the movement of students from one college to another, some colleges have re-opened some courses after closing them earlier, or have maintained the same cut-off percentage.

Dyal Singh College had closed B.Com (Hons) after the first list. However, after 20 withdrawals following the second list, the college was forced to open the course again in the third list.

Hindu College has also been hit by withdrawals. “After Shri Ram College of Commerce lowered its cut-off for B.Com (Hons), we witnessed a lot of withdrawals. We now have 23 candidates against 54 seats in that course, so we had to keep it open,” said officiating Principal Subhash Chowdhury.

“In Economics (Hons), we just need a couple of candidates, as we already have 51 students for 50 seats,” he added.

Hindu College has retained its first cut-off (92.75-96.75 per cent) for Economics in the second as well as third list.

Three of its most admired courses -- B.Com (Hons), Economics (Hons) and Psychology (Hons) -- are still available at LSR in the third cut-off list.

If a student prefers course over college, the third cut-off list presents many options to candidates in several Humanities and Commerce courses.

Meanwhile, several colleges have closed admissions in different courses. “We have closed all Arts and Commerce courses, barring Sanskrit (Hons). We have announced a third cut-off in Science courses, like B.Sc Physical Sciences, B.Sc. Life Sciences, B.Sc. Applied Physical Sciences, Botany (Hons) and Zoology (Hons),” said Hans Raj College Principal S.R. Arora.

Miranda House is still offering B.A. (P), Sanskrit (Hons) and Sociology (Hons), while Venkateswara College will continue to admit students in B.A. (P), History (Hons) and Hindi (Hons).

Among Science courses, Physics (Hons) and Chemistry (Hons) are no longer available in several colleges like Acharya Narendra Dev, Gargi, Hans Raj, Hindu, Ramjas and Venkateswara. However, honours courses in Botany and Zoology can be pursued at Hindu College, KMC, Maitreyi, Ramjas, Venkateswara and Zakir Husain College.

In Science courses, different colleges have dropped the cut-off between 1 and 9 per cent.

A third list for candidates from the Other Backward Classes has been issued by colleges in a majority of Arts, Commerce and Science courses (even those that are shut for general category students). Principals have pointed out that not many OBC candidates had been showing up for admission despite relaxation in the minimum eligibility criteria.
