Rhythm rules: Contestants at the hip hop style dance contest organised at Hyderabad Central on Saturday. HYDERABAD: Had Kool DJ Herc, the pioneer of hip hop movement been in the city on Saturday, he would have been thrilled. Hip hop, the movement that emerged in Bronx in the good ol’ 70s, came to the city as dancers let their limbs and body language do the talking at a hip hop style dance contest organised by the Hyderabad Central mall here. Clad in loose colourful garbs and dressed the ‘yo’ way – caps worn sideways, hoods over their heads, metal jewellery adorning their necks and fingers and arm bands over their elbows, the city’s youngsters grooved to some high decibel music. Twelve teams (including some solo dancers) competed feverishly flaunting some high energetic break dance moves. As shoppers set aside their plans for a while, craning their necks taking in the performances and cheering the teams, they couldn’t have asked for a better audience. The loud beats of popular hip hop numbers ‘Bebo’ of Black Eyed Peas and ‘Lo’ of Timberland filled the air as the dancers B-boyed. Judges Sai and Mukilan evaluated their performances based on innovative moves, rhythm, costumes, synchronisation, track selection among others. Beat Breakers, who had the audience and judges swaying to their well-synchronised cool performance with snazzy chairs as props, walked away winners with a Rs.25,000 cash prize while a goatee-sporting Gopi Krishna with his drawn out vigorous moves was declared the runner up.
