TIRUCHI: The Golden Rock branch of Consumer Protection Council Tamil Nadu has appealed to Union Minister of Textiles Dayanidhi Maran to take punitive action against unscrupulous elements involved in smuggling of mosquito nets from Bangladesh and safeguard the country’s mosquito net units. In a statement, its secretary H. Ghouse Baig said mosquito nets manufactured in Karur and Salem districts were being sold in North Indian States. Mosquito nets manufactured in Bangladesh were being smuggled into the country and sold in northern states at cheaper rates resulting in loss of income to the government besides causing stagnation of local products. The smuggling of nets from Bangladesh had an adverse bearing on employment opportunities to the local people affecting the trade which had already been hit by instability in the price of raw materials and frequent power cuts, he said.
