United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) recently declared that “Badagas of Nilgiris hospitality is the best” and conferred on our community the “global” honour. Hospitality is ingrained in the Badaga community.

The people of Nilgiris thank UNESCO for honouring Badagas.

Role model

I was awe-struck on reading the report on the life and struggles of Mr. B. Satheesh Balan (‘Personality of the Week’, June 22). I appreciate his perseverance, confidence and courage and admire him for achieving his ambition of becoming an IPS officer.

The path to his success was not paved with a bed of roses. It was his hard work and confidence that turned him from a ‘slumdog’ category to a ‘watchdog’ category. He is a role model whom youngsters should emulate.

Facilities in library

The Kavundampalayam local library that caters to a growing population calls for prompt attention in many respects.

With the arrival of 500 new books (which are welcome though) in addition to the existing stock of 5,000 books in tightly-packed shelves, not to speak of the dailies and periodicals regularly flowing in, lack of space has become a big problem.

The clerical work involved in classifying, listing and numbering the books etc. is overwhelming.

It is difficult for a librarian to manage everything single-handed.

An assistant to the librarian is an absolute must.
