HYDERABAD: The Praja Rajyam has regretted that despite having a woman as Home Minister, the number of atrocities on women in the State is on the rise. At a press conference here on Friday, the party’s official spokesperson Vasireddy Padma and Yuva Rajyam general secretary D. Sravan said that contrary to expectations that things would improve, with P. Sabita Reddy as Home Minister, the number of instances were only going up. They said that only by coming down on such offences with an iron hand could confidence be instilled among women that they could be safe in today’s society. TDP MLA caseReferring to the rape of a nursing student allegedly by the Telugu Desam MLA in Kovvur, Ms. Padma said once so much of brouhaha was created, it would be in the fitness of things that the people’s representative threw more light on what had happened. Mr. Sravan said that no longer could only the gun and knife be considered lethal weapons. Considering the number of cases being reported, acid was also being added to the list and it was becoming imperative for government to bring in a system of regulating availability of acid. He said while the case of police delivering swift justice by shooting down the killer in an acid attack case was welcomed by society, what was required was a system where justice could be delivered fast following democratic principles. Hence, there was every need for fast track courts to be set up to deliver justice in such cases, he said.
