Letters to the Editor
This refers to the report “Visiting the Vavuniya IDP camps: an uplifting experience” (July 4). N. Ram’s eyewitness account of the conditions in the camps for the internally displaced in Sri Lanka was enlightening. It was nice to see pictures of smiling children in uniforms near their makeshift schools, and men and women undergoing vocational training. There is no doubt that this write-up, along with the self-explanatory photographs, will go a long way in disproving the accusation that there was ethnic cleansing of Sri Lankan Tamils in the island nation. Indeed, a picture is worth a thousand words. It was a bit surprising to learn from Mr. Ram’s account that Sri Lankan refugee camps in India are inaccessible to journalists and independent observers. A. Faizur Rahman, Chennai Thanks to Mr. Ram for belying stories on the conditions of Sri Lankan IDPs. The reports hitherto carried in the western media made disturbing reading. The United Nations should rise to the occasion and mobilise help from all countries so that the Sri Lankan government can complete the resettlement plan much ahead of the proposed 180 days.K. Nehru Patnaik, Visakhapatnam
