Three rescued after earth caves in

Bangalore: After a series of earth cave-ins in the recent past that cost human lives, three workers trapped by falling earth while digging a well were rescued after hours of struggle by the officials of the Fire and Emergency Services Department here on Sunday.

The department named the workers as Santhosh (30), Gangadhar (39) and Ranganath (45), natives of Katpadi in Tamil Nadu. All were shifted to the K.C. General Hospital in Malleswaram where they are recovering. Three department employees who suffered injuries during the rescue operation were treated in hospital.

The incident occurred near Shankar Math near Basaveshwaranagar at 8.30 a.m. where Keshava Murthy, a resident of Basaveshwaranagar, was constructing a house on his land behind New Goutham College near Modi Hospital.

On Sunday, while they were working on the well, about half a tonne of earth gave way and fell on them, said an officer of the Mahalakshmi Layout police station. Mr. Keshava Murthy, who was supervising the work, shouted to passers-by for help. However, the public’s rescue efforts went it vain and they called the Fire and Emergency Services, whose rescue team, headed by Fire Officer Rangaswamaiah (Regional Fire Officer – West Division), rushed to the spot.
