Letters to the Editor
A person’s sexual behaviour is not much of one’s choice. Bisexuality is determinable in a new born, but homosexuality shows its sign at the age of puberty. Our sex centre is located in the hypothalamus which is the part of the brain that also controls the heart rate and blood pressure and emotions. This is the area in which hormones, particularly testosterone, stimulate a person’s sexual orientation. So a homosexual cannot help it if he/she is attracted towards a person of the same sex. Considering it a crime is being unfair to a class of society. Pallavi Madaan, Jagadhri I applaud the Delhi High Court’s ruling on homosexuality — a blow to discrimination and prejudice. I deplore the knee-jerk criticism by those who follow religious texts that allow polygamy, forbid contraception, call for the sacrifice of innocent animals, enshrine the notion of caste and treat Dalits and women as inferiors.Rajiv M, Secunderabad It has been fashionable to overstate minority demands even when they lack merit — a syndrome that affects the whole society. Institutions should act intelligently while dealing with such issues as LGTB and leave it to the judiciary. One hopes courts will resolve the issue keeping in view the rich culture and tradition of India and the sanctity of human race. Sangram Keshari Sahu, Bhubaneswar While it may be all right to decriminalise indulgence by adults in unnatural sex in private, it is dangerous to approve and encourage such behaviour besides according legal and social recognition to same sex marriage. The government should not hesitate to make unlawful attempts to promote gay and lesbian culture. It is strange that our women’s organisations which are vociferous in protecting the rights of women are not protesting the concept of same sex marriage which will deny the right of legal motherhood to women. K.N. Ramani, CoimbatoreWhat is more shocking than the Delhi High Court ruling on gay sex is the number of people supporting it. While the rights of homosexuals to choose their way of life cannot, and should not, be questioned by society, the law of land should not be modified to create a situation in which such relationships can be approved as legitimate family relationships. K.S. Ramakrishnan, Chennai
