Letters to the Editor
This refers to the report “I have a political solution in mind but I want to get that from the people: President Rajapaksa (July 6).” The President’s concern for a quick re-settlement of the displaced Tamils is evident from his interview. It is heartening that differences among various sections of people based on race will not have any place in his vision for a post-conflict Sri Lanka. This is in conformity with the island nation’s friendly relations with India. K.S.Thampi, Chennai President Rajapaksa’s interview gives a lot of hope to Sri Lankan Tamils provided he implements his plans without delay. Tamils in Sri Lanka have been discriminated against for decades. The mindless war by LTTE chief Prabakaran prevented the Tamils from joining the mainstream. The Sri Lankan government should not waste time rehabilitating and guaranteeing equal rights and involving the Tamils in nation building. If the government fails to swing into action immediately, the victory in the war against the LTTE will be negated. Harikrishna S. Holla, Bangalore Mr. Rajapaksa’s assertion that “...there are no minorities in Sri Lanka, there are only those who love the country and those who don’t....” is a simple and powerful statement loaded with significance for India too. Giving special treatment to the minorities has only resulted in their ever increasing communal demands as is evident in every election in India. Mr. Rajapaksa also did not shy away from taking on the terrorists even though they belonged to the minority. He never had an eye on the minority votes when hard decisions had to be taken in the best interest of the country. B. Devadas, Palakkad
